Mikage Shinohara (篠原 御影, Shinohara Mikage) is a former acquaintance and friend of Marika Tachibana during junior high.
Appearance[]
Mikage has flowing back-length dark hair that has a pink hair accessory on the top-right side of her hair and navy-blue eyes.
She dons the same outfit/uniform as Marika Tachibana, considering the two were once schoolmates before - a white-grey shirt coupled with a yellow cravat and a striped, dark-grey, knee-length skirt.[1]
Personality[]
Marika Tachibana describes Mikage as "a girl with good pedigree that has the mind of an old man".[2] Mikage is an upbeat girl that in the same time, gives off the impression of a refined young lady. Beneath this however, Mikage acts pervertedly towards "attractive" women through harassing them such as by sniffing their hair and groping their breasts.[2][3] Mikage is very straightforward and somewhat pushy as she demanded that Raku Ichijō and Marika kiss to affirm their relationship as lovers. Although Mikage has a tendency of teasing Marika, by fulfilling her role as an older sister to her, Mikage is caring and supportive towards Marika and to those close to her, all the while acting mature and serious whenever the situations calls for it.
Background[]
Mikage is a student from an unnamed prestige school. During her time as a junior high student, she was once a ringleader of a group that tends to bully Marika Tachibana after her month-long absence and her being an outcast in class. After ten days of continuous bullying, Mikage and her group was trampled upon by Marika single-handedly as she took control of the entire school from the shadows.[2][4]
For unknown reasons, Mikage grew fond of Marika and took the role of being the "big sister" for the latter.
Story[]
Mikage is introduced as Marika's old junior-high friend who came to visit Bonyari High School on one particular day. When Mikage asks about Marika's fiancé in front of the class, Marika has to distract her by pointing to "a hot girl in the hallway", before pulling Raku over and asking to date her, having already told Mikage a lie about her relationship with Raku. Raku is then properly introduced to Mikage, who promptly displays her perverted tendencies in front of him by asking if he has "felt Marika's boobs yet". Mikage then raises the more-sensitive topic of kissing. When Raku and Marika hesitate on Mikage's next question, Mikage says she won't leave until they kiss each other.
Mikage's perverted behavior continues in front of Tsugumi and Haru. After a break between lessons, Mikage reveals the dating situation of Marika and Raku to Chitoge, but the rest of the class hear it. Chitoge decides to play along, until she loses her rag and punches Raku out of the school building again. Raku decides to skip the rest of school, thus allowing Mikage to set Raku and Marika up on a date at the amusement park. Since they are being watched by Mikage, they act normally. Mikage takes advantage of Raku excusing himself, in order to have a polite one-on-one with Marika. Mikage is surprised to hear that Marika hasn't told Raku about "you-know-what", and prefers to take her time with Raku. As soon as Mikage senses that Raku was eavesdropping, she decides not to see Raku and Marika kiss. Instead, she sets the both of them up in a ferris wheel, then calls up Honda for an update on Marika's situation. Because Honda is contractually obliged to not give away private details about Marika, Mikage thus relents and pleads for Honda to look after Marika. A few hours later, Mikage is seen off at the train station on her way home. Before she does so, she reveals that she knew Raku and Marika had only been pretending to date. It is also only then that Mikage reveals to Raku that she had been the junior high bully of Marika's past.
Mikage returns in Contract when she is called over the phone by Raku, being informed of Marika's situation. Mikage had long known the situation with Marika's family - especially the fact that Marika would be married off as part of tradition, and that Marika does not get along with her mother because of this. She also feels unable to help Marika. The next day, however, Raku and his friends fly to Kyushu in an attempt to save Marika; Mikage is informed of it, and arranges an escort for them, but does not reveal a more important reason for Marika's situation.
Mikage does manage to see Marika at her palace-shaped family home, but under a strict 20-minute observation. There, she sees Marika slumped on the couch, clearly depressed at her situation. As Mikage expected, Marika admits she grew closer to Raku's other friends as well. They hear Raku and his group trying to locate Marika. Raku and his group are swiftly kicked out by the palace guards. With her observation time almost up, Mikage says Marika shouldn't be worried about the others, and leaves. Mikage greets Raku's group with the usual perverted tendencies before taking on a sense of urgency, by leading the group towards a secret entrance. She has Raku, Chitoge and Tsugumi go through while Kosaki, Ruri and Shu stay behind to help her.
Raku, Chitoge and Tsugumi's first attempt at infiltration fails, with all three locked in two separate cells. The next morning, Mikage enters through a different passageway avoiding detection, and frees Raku from his cell. They hurry to free Chitoge and Tsugumi, before discussing plans to crash Marika's wedding. Mikage reveals that she has already positioned Kosaki and Ruri to act as temporary workers. Upon hearing news that the wedding ceremony would be moved forward. Mikage helps Raku, Chitoge, Shu and Tsugumi sneak towards where the wedding would take place. Conflict breaks out, forcing Mikage to escape.
Mikage is next seen as a passenger on a helicopter she hired; after climbing down to the roof, she throws down a ladder to help with Marika's escape. A first escape attempt fails with Raku struggling to hang on to the ladder attached to the helicopter. A flashback to Mikage's meeting with Honda at the amusement park reveals that Honda had agreed to support Marika right from the start, even if it meant going against Marika's mother. After the second rescue attempt succeeds, Mikage goes to greet Chitoge and Tsugumi who were still at the palace, hoping that Raku forgives her for the lie she told earlier.
Etymology[]
- The name Mikage means "honorable, manipulate, govern" (御) (mi) and "shadow, shade, other side" (影) (kage).
- Mikage's surname Shinohara means "bamboo grass" (篠) (shino) and "field, plain" (原) (hara).
